My Hyundai or Kia Key Won't Turn. What Should I Do?

Tell us what's happening and we'll ask the right questions before recommending anything.

Hyundai Kia ignition and key problems - Fast Valdosta Locksmith, Valdosta GA

Tell us what's happening and whether the ignition has been serviced before, whether your vehicle uses a traditional key, a transponder key, or a Smart Key/proximity system, and whether a working key remains.

Smaller Key Blades, More Wear

Older Hyundai and Kia models use smaller 8-cut key blades than many other brands. Those smaller blades, and the internal wafer tumblers they operate, can wear down - or in some cases break - more easily with age and a heavy keychain.

Check Park Position First

Before assuming the ignition itself has failed, we check whether the shifter is fully seated in Park - a shift-interlock issue can mimic an ignition problem and is a much simpler fix. Applying gentle side pressure on the steering wheel while turning the key can also release a mechanically locked steering column.

Repair vs. Replacement

When the wear is limited to the key or the cylinder, a repair or a factory-spec replacement key is often enough. If a key has broken off inside the ignition, don't try to remove it yourself - and if the key turns normally but the car won't start, that's a key-turns-but-won't-start situation that points elsewhere rather than the mechanical lock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know exactly what's wrong before I call?

No. Tell us what's happening and we'll ask a few questions to narrow it down before recommending anything.

My key won't turn and the shifter feels off - could that be related?

Yes - a shifter not fully in Park can mimic an ignition problem on many Hyundai and Kia models. We check that before assuming the ignition itself has failed.

Are Hyundai/Kia keys more prone to breaking?

Older models use smaller 8-cut blades that can wear or break more easily with age than larger-blade brands - we inspect the key itself as part of the diagnosis.
